What a job card really is

A job card is the shop-floor packet for a work order — the instruction that travels with a job and tells the operator what to make, how much, down which route of operations and work centers, and where to record what was done. On an Indian shop floor it is the most familiar object there is: the thing a supervisor hands over, the thing that sits on the machine, the thing that comes back marked up at the end of the shift.

Because it is so familiar, the job card is the ideal place to start a digital transition — and the worst place to be careless. A job card that does not match the released work order and route is worse than no card, because the floor trusts it. So the first principle of job-card management is that the card is generated from the released order and its route sheet, never maintained separately.

The hidden cost of paper job cards

A paper job card is a one-way instruction. It tells the operator what to do beautifully, and then it goes silent. Whatever actually happened on the job — how much was completed, how much rejected, where it stalled — lives only on that marked-up sheet until someone transcribes it, hours or days later, into a register or spreadsheet. Three costs follow from that gap.

  • No live position. Between the card leaving the office and coming back, nobody knows where the job is without walking to it.
  • Transcription drift. Re-keying a card into a system introduces delay and error, so the record never quite matches the floor.
  • Lost rejection data. Reject counts scribbled in a margin rarely make it into any analysis, so quality loses its best source.

None of these is dramatic on any single job. They are corrosive in aggregate: the plant is always managing yesterday's picture, and the data that would drive improvement evaporates one card at a time.

Batch printing and sheet allocation

The first practical step is not to abolish the paper card but to make it consistent and effortless to produce.
